Why I Fall For Promotional Contests Every Time
I have a stack of yellow Atlantic Avenue pieces for the McDonalds’ Monopoly game even though I consider fast food a heart attack in a bag. I buy more Tim Horton’s coffees in a week of their Roll Up the Rim promo every March than any human should drink in a month. And when the local hardware store ran an online Spin to Win campaign last Christmas, I logged in every day even though it meant playing an obnoxious elf game.
I know it’s pathetic. I know that I’m playing right into their hands like a mind-controlled lemming. But they draw me in every time with their promises of free food, free cars, money.
After all, I tell myself, someone has to win those prizes. I have as good a chance as anyone. That my chances of winning are so slim I have a better chance of growing another inch doesn’t matter. I might win. I might. And no one can convince me otherwise no matter how much they smirk and laugh behind their hands.
I revel in the anticipation of peeling the stickers off that sheaf of fries I shouldn’t be eating (but can justify because the calories will all be worth it if I win.) Will it be Boardwalk at last? Or only another stupid Reading Railroad? The collection of the different pieces is part of the fun. Peeling them off and sticking them on the game board provides a certain sense of satisfaction. (Even if I do have to let my husband peel the ones off his own food.)
These little games, stupid as they are, give me something to hope for. Maybe when we roll up the rim on this coffee, we’ll win the car so we can retire our rust bucket that’s held together with duct tape and dirt. Maybe when we peel this sticker, we’ll get the money we need to pay off our student loans or quit the job we hate to follow our dream.
As Snow White tells bail bondswoman Emma Swann in the premier episode of Once Upon A Time, “Believing in even the possibility of a happy ending is a very powerful thing.” That’s what really draws me in. It isn’t the prizes. It isn’t even the money (nice as that would be).
It’s the possibility of a happy ending.
In the last year and a half, I had dental surgery because my front tooth randomly fell out, my husband tore both his hamstrings at once leading to a slow rehab, my dog died of cancer, my husband lost his job, my truck was totaled, I had to take a job that makes me want to curl up in the fetal position, and I had to give up my horses—to name only a few.
Playing the silly promotional contests helps remind me on the bad days that things will get better. No, I probably won’t win the car or the money. But the rocky times we’ve faced lately won’t last either.
Tomorrow might be the day my husband gets a job. It might be the day I land an agent. It might just be a perfect day for no particular reason at all.
Or I might roll up the rim on my coffee cup and win $100,000. You never know.
What things do you do even though you know they’re silly and irrational? What little habits or routines do you have that for some unexplainable reason make you feel good? What helps you believe in the possibility of a happy ending?

Sending good vibes your way, Marcy. Maybe today IS your day! I sure hope so!!!
Nov 10, 2011 @ 09:05:51
Thanks, Diane! It’s still early in the day. You just never know 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 09:13:00
Sheesh! First, I’ll join Diane in sending out good vibes to you and yours. Second, what doon’t I do? Except for sacrificing a chicken in our back yard, I’m pretty much a freak when it comes to belief and hope and prayer and magic.
I really do think anytime you direct positive energy to a goal, something happens, maybe just a click, but it’s a click in the right direction.
Hang in there.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 11:08:49
The really interesting thing about finding things, however small, that bring hope and help keep you positive is that I think you’re better able to weather the hard times than someone who only looks at the negative. Thanks for stopping by and commenting 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 09:45:17
Oh, my. I am sending positive thoughts your way. For a first, HC post, I think you’ve done a bang up job. 🙂 You are so right about the hope attached to the contests. And I’m hoping you get more than hope, real soon!
Nov 10, 2011 @ 11:07:11
Thanks, Lynette. I appreciate the well wishes and encouragement 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 09:53:23
I’ve always been a sucker for the McDonald’s monopoly game, even though the biggest thing I’ve ever won is a Quarter Pounder.
I still think it’s a good thing to have childlike hope, and those contests draw on that. So good for you!
Nov 10, 2011 @ 11:06:43
The biggest thing I’ve won is a smoothie, but that’s definitely better than if I hadn’t won anything 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 09:59:18
I have a stack of States Ave if you need them. That seems to be the one I always get.
You’re totally right. The rocky times won’t last forever. And when they do finally go away, you’ll be able the appreciate the good times even more. Keep your chin up!
Nov 10, 2011 @ 11:10:36
Haha. You can tell almost immediately what’s going to be the most common one for a particular round, can’t you 🙂
I think as writers, when we share our stories, maybe we let other people in similar situations know that they’re not alone either and that things can and will get better eventually.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 10:12:33
I join Diane and Amy in sending good vibes your way, and I’m throwing in a bucketful of luck. Things WILL get better. Meanwhile, hang tight to the possibility of a happy ending and savor every cup of coffee.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 16:43:42
Thanks, Pat. I will. My husband teases that I’m “instant human just add coffee.” 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 11:28:56
As a fellow roll up the rim addict, I do understand the attraction. I also understand the hope for a better future, a happy ending.
About 16 yrs ago I had a year like that. I ended up bankrupt, single, with two adult children who swore they’d never speak to me again. There was more that year, but this is enough to let you know that many of us have been there. we can assure you, the hard times don’t last. The clouds will pass and the sun will shine again. Hang in there girl, your turn’s coming.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 16:49:01
We Canadians do have a thing for Tim Hortons 🙂 Thanks for sharing your story. I’m really sorry that you had to go through all that, but it’s encouraging to me to hear from other people who’ve faced a rough string and came out the other side stronger for it.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 11:45:41
I can totally relate! There’s always this little voice that says, they have to pick a name or it’s illegal or something. It ~could~ be your name. What harm can it be to enter? 🙂 I always tell myself there’s a sign I should go for it. The other day, I entered a drawing for a snazzy blender that does everything and just about serves the soup and does the dishes. Months ago, my son broke the glass jar to my blender so I told myself it was a sign that I needed to enter because I was sure to win! Sadly, my name is pretty much never drawn. I think I’ve won a paperback once. I was so excited you’d think I’d won the trip to Tahiti. 🙂
On another note, hugs about your string of bad luck. Dang! I’m sending positive vibes your way that things turn around. Hang in there!
Nov 10, 2011 @ 16:51:26
Thanks for stopping by, Ginger 🙂 I get hugely excited about every little win too. My mom is the queen of winning contests. She’s won bikes and blenders and gift baskets. Sadly I don’t think I take after her, but that doesn’t stop me from trying.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 11:56:27
I play the grocery store games. I usually end up with a new pan or something. Oh yay, look I won. Ha ha. Sending massively good vibes your way. You never now, it could be your turn. I used to be friends with a gal whose parents had won the state lottery. They were doing alright for themselves. So good things can happen. 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 16:53:06
Back when I was in university, the previous owners of the house I lived in (one of my roommate’s dads bought it so she’d have a place to live) won the lottery and that’s why they were selling their small house and moving to a bigger one in a better location. It has to happen to someone 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 14:33:50
I am a believer in the tough times make you stronger. So here’s to your strength and hoping for a much easier coming year!
I love these games too, it’s just fun. And I get a little crazy about winning a free drink, who knows what I’d do if I won a car:)
Your first non-writing post was fun to read- way to go!
Nov 10, 2011 @ 16:55:21
Thanks, Kara 🙂 I think if I ever actually won something big I’d think I was dreaming and spend about a week waiting for someone to tell me they’d made a mistake.
I’m with you on tough times making you stronger. I think there’s always something we can learn from whatever we’re going through 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 14:39:45
It’s all about hope, isn’t it? We need something to give us a possibility of hope. A little present from the universe will always make our day 🙂
“Hope” you gets lots of presents soon!
Nov 10, 2011 @ 16:56:19
Thanks, Shannon 🙂 It is surprising the good even a little hope can do. Seems like humans are hardwired so that if they have hope they can endure almost anything.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 16:17:16
Love your site Marcy and I relate to your post! Here’s hoping the good is coming your way!!
Nov 10, 2011 @ 16:41:30
Thanks, Coleen. I appreciate it 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 18:34:38
Ach, Marcy-girl. Life is rough sometimes. Hang in there. And you’re spot-on: a little bit of hope can go a long, long way!
*hugs*
Nov 11, 2011 @ 08:17:35
Thanks, Myndi 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 20:12:44
Marcy, I’m so sorry for all you’re dealing with. The stress sure takes a toll on us. We’re going through a year like you are. It’s tough and I just let the tears come so I don’t hold it in and have a stroke or heart attack. Tears are good. We went to McDonalds a month ago and I was so tempted to play the Monopoly game, but money is super tight and I knew we wouldn’t be getting fast food anytime soon, so I threw them away, but I know exactly what you mean. And, hey, why shouldn’t your name come up as the winner. What the heck. It’s the scammers that call or are online that you have to watch for. If you want to be a winner, enter some of the contests that bloggers offer. I’ve won six books from contests I’ve entered since I started blogging in May! Most of them were just for leaving a comment. I can’t afford to buy many books at all anymore, except for some 99 centers for my Kindle, so receiving those books in the mail and enjoying a good read is a real pick-me-up! So give it a shot. I hope you’ll win. The odds are so much better. And I’ll pray that things get much better for you – real soon.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 21:47:40
Lynn, I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through a similar year. My husband has certainly seen his share of tears that seem to come from nowhere when the stress gets to be too much. I love the idea of getting books through contests. Winning six since May is amazing 🙂 I depend a lot on our local library because books for me aren’t in the budget either. I’m going to take your advice and enter some book giveaways. And I’ll be praying for you as well.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 21:20:39
High Concept indeed! Who hasn’t entered a contest or bought some McD’s in hopes for boardwalk. I know I have…..a lot! I love the feeling of pulling that little sticker back. I also really love getting a new tech gadget for obvious reasons but, one of them is that I can’t wait to pull back that screen protector!! I’m with ya girl…..the feeling of hope goes a long way to keep our spirits up. Good for you for keeping your boot straps pulled up! I’m sending all good thoughts and positive vibes your way and hoping your run of bad luck is past you…..that agent could totally call tomorrow! 🙂 {{{hugs}}}
Nov 11, 2011 @ 17:08:50
Hehe. Molly, I have a feeling you’re a bubble wrap popper too. There’s something about certain tactile sensations that just make you feel good 🙂 Thanks for the good thoughts and hugs.
Nov 10, 2011 @ 21:26:57
Marcy, I’m so inspired by this post. I love your honesty and optimism, amidst a bumpy year. For what it’s worth, I do believe that rain brings rainbows…and that yours are en route. Stay well and know many are cheering for you!
Nov 11, 2011 @ 17:09:29
Thanks, August. I really appreciate the well wishes and support 🙂
Nov 10, 2011 @ 21:34:48
We buy lottery tickets, then discuss what we’d do with the millions of dollars should we ever win.
Thankfully, when life gets tough, there’s only one way to go and that’s up. Hang in there, Marcy! 🙂
Nov 11, 2011 @ 17:07:30
My husband and I love talking about what we’d do if we won *insert amount of prize money here* too. Sometimes the fun is as much in the dreaming about winning as it is in the winning itself. I’m so glad to hear someone else does the same thing we do 🙂
Nov 11, 2011 @ 02:29:11
I feel that way about online promotions like surveys you get on the bottom of your receipt. I wonder how many people enter these things and if anyone actually wins the $1000 shopping spree. You never hear of anyone who wins those.
Nov 11, 2011 @ 17:05:47
I’ve heard that on some contests you need to watch the language. For example, if it says “someone could win,” it means that someone won’t necessarily win. I call those contests “hope stealers.”
Nov 11, 2011 @ 17:13:05
That was an inspiring post and you make me feel normal for always hoping. Sometimes I feel like a silly optomist when Negetive Nelly’s try to poop on my parade. But, I think the chance of winning something, even something small, does give us something to look forward to. I even won something at a staff meeting the other day: a certificate for an extra long lunch break. I felt like I was on The Price is Right when I walked up to claim my certificate. It was an awesome day. Thanks for keeping hope alive!
Nov 11, 2011 @ 20:57:16
It’s amazing how much even something small can make our day 🙂 It’s great to know I’m not the only one who loves silly contests and tries to keep hoping for the best!
Nov 12, 2011 @ 19:56:13
I confess! I enter contests–or perhaps “drawings” would be the better term. My only rule is that entry must be free. But… I do win things. Biggest would be … a DVD player, I think. But I’ve won a number of free e-books on blog giveaways, and that’s really nice. I always enter those now, if I’m pretty sure I’d like the books. Sure, they might only cost a few dollars to buy, but it somehow feels so much more fun to win them.
Nov 13, 2011 @ 15:22:26
So true 🙂 The size of the prize doesn’t seem to matter, does it. Even if it would have only cost $5, it’s so much better to win it. Thanks for stopping by.
