Battleship – More than Just a Board Game?
Three things entice me to watch a movie in the theater–an amazing plot, connection to a book I loved, or a romance that gives me stomach flutters. Even better if you can put those things together.
But I’m going to watch Battleship in theaters. Why? For the same reason I watched Battle: Los Angeles in theaters. My husband is a man who loves to see things explode on the big screen. Doesn’t matter to him if there’s any plot at all as long as the movie is full of stunning pyrotechnics. Since I love my husband and he sometimes goes to watch movies with me that rank really low on his list, this is what I’ll be seeing in two weeks.
So here’s my question for you–would you rather play Battleship the board game (like me) or watch Battleship the movie (like my husband)?

Well, since Taylor Kitch is in it and it looks WAY better than that John whatever movie of his, I will see it for sure. Maybe at home, maybe in the theater. That depends. It actually looks like a movie my dad and brothers would like to see, so I can probably go with them.
May 04, 2012 @ 08:19:14
I didn’t think about it, but Taylor Kitsch is a bonus. He’s actually Canadian too.
And what a great idea to go with your dad and brothers. I’d love to go to the movies with my brother sometimes, but we’ve yet to find movie common ground. He likes the really artsy-type movies that I find depressing and plotless.

Oh, Marcy, you are such a loving, caring wife. Me? I’d be trolling acquaintances for someone to go to that movie with the hubster. If all else fails, I call my stepson and pull out the, “Remember when I
editedwrote those papers for you in HS?” guilt card. “Payback time!”I love Battleship, the board game. That and Clue are my favorite kind of game. Unlike Chutes an Ladders, I have control over the outcome. They’re logic puzzles and, if I play my pegs right, I can rock the win on both of them. Woot!
May 04, 2012 @ 08:56:23
Haha. Seems to me like you have a perfect guilt card to use when you need it π
I loved Clue too. It’s one of my absolute favorites because of the skill element involved. So many games are all chance, and I like one that makes me think through strategy.

Hi Marcy –
I definitely would prefer to play the game, mainly because this movie does not entice me. However, for me, there are movies that I have to see on the big screen: movies with sweeping views, mvoies with great special effects and action (that are movies I want to see in the first place). I call these my “Big Screen Movies,” because part of the appeal is seeing them is the big cinemetopraphy and/or big adventuurd/action sequences.

I agree. Some movies just have to be seen on the big screen. My husband and I saw Avatar on the big screen, for example, but have always regretted not seeing it in 3D.
May 04, 2012 @ 08:57:08
Brownie points as a wife, Marcy. well done. let us know what you think. any chance Hubster will share his thoughts?
May 04, 2012 @ 14:06:34
He hasn’t done a guest post in a while, so I’ll see if I can talk him into it.
May 04, 2012 @ 10:14:39
Well, I thought I’d hate Transformers and wound up loving all three of them. Don’t laugh. Also loved Thor and totally looking forward to The Avengers. So maybe Battleship. Haven’t decided yet.
The board game? NO. My husband is a cocky strategist, and it irks me. I can never figure out how to beat him.
As you might tell, I’m not a pleasant loser;)
May 04, 2012 @ 14:08:47
I can’t laugh. I loved the Transformer movies too, though less so the second one.
Maybe that’s why I enjoy the board game – I usually win π
May 04, 2012 @ 15:44:18
I will wait till this is on cable, unless my kid wants to see it. I don’t think my husband wants to see it. He gave Battle LA thumbs down. On the other hand, we have seen every Transformer movie on the big screen, and thank god they fixed the fatal (dumb humor) errors they made with the second one when they filmed the third.
You’re a good wife, Marcy. With the kids, the husband’s schedule and the cost of babysitting, we don’t get to the movies as often as we like. We have to pick and chose. We often try to find something we can both agree upon.
May 04, 2012 @ 15:57:03
That makes sense to me. We’re more free in what we do right now because we don’t have kids. I’m sure when we do, we’ll see a lot more movies on DVD or Netflix rather than going to the theater.
May 04, 2012 @ 19:37:55
I’ve heard there’s pretty much no substance to this movie, so I think I’d go for the board game. If I hadn’t heard anything about it, I probably would’ve said the movie – I love seeing things blow up too!
May 04, 2012 @ 22:19:51
I heard the same thing about it being lightweight in terms of plot. If I hadn’t heard that, I’d also be excited about seeing it. I’m all for explosions that support the plot. Maybe, though, since I’m going in with realistic expectations I can try to enjoy it for what it is rather than for what I wish it was.
May 05, 2012 @ 01:26:55
If someone else was paying the ticket price? I’d go watch the flick. I don’t mind mindless explossions every so often, and there is the possibility that it’ll have something worth while (interesting character, a subplot story arc worth thinking about, eye candy).
If it came down to spending ten bucks to watch the show or playing battle ship? Well that’s a whole nother story…
May 07, 2012 @ 23:06:21
We have free tickets, so that did make the choice easier π
May 05, 2012 @ 10:48:30
Hub and I are seeing Avengers later this morning. Battleship is on our to-see list, but with the new Spiderman coming out soon, it might have to wait for DVD. Taylor Kitsch made a decent enough John Carter, and it might have been a great movie if Disney hadn’t killed the original story. Would like to hear what you think of Battleship, hope it’s a good one!
May 07, 2012 @ 23:08:19
We have a certain amount of free tickets, so we have Avengers, Battleship, Snow White and the Huntsman, and the new Spiderman on our list. We saw Avengers in 3D, and I think we’ll pass on the 3D next time. For some reason, it detracted from the movie.
May 05, 2012 @ 18:28:33
Definitely play the game! I loved the game as a kid and I love playing it with my kids now.
May 07, 2012 @ 23:09:06
Some games never get old π
May 06, 2012 @ 11:01:20
Hmmm, you got me with that question. There is something thrilling about being able to hear the words, ‘You sunk my battleship!’, but I do want to see the movie in the theater as well. It looks totally corny. Still, big explosions, the aliens get the snot kicked out of them, yeah I’m in.
By the way, when you play Battleship, do you do that thing of putting your ship at the top of the game board and ‘sink’ it with sound effects? Or is that just us? π
May 07, 2012 @ 23:12:04
Hehe. I have to plead guilty to that one. It’s good to know we’re not alone! And it makes it more fun, don’t you think π
May 08, 2012 @ 07:54:12
I gotta say it, I am a sucker for a good ol’ “blow everything up” kind of action movie. So I’m pretty pumped to see this one on the big screen. Here’s hoping it turns out ok! LOL!!
May 22, 2012 @ 12:52:23
I am holding out for Prometheus, which looks like it may have both a plot and some alien generated explosions, at least until Pixar releases Brave. I had kids so I could go see Pixar films and not feel Wierd about it.
