How Much Do You Know About Snow White?
In honor of the release of Snow White and the Huntsman this weekend, I came up with a quick quiz for you to see how much you know about the 1812 Brothers Grimm version of the Snow White fairy tale.
1. What were the names of the dwarves?
a) Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Plick, Whick, and Quee
b) Grumpy, Happy, Sneezy, Sleepy, Bashful, Dopey, and Doc
c) They didn’t have names
2. How many times does the Queen try to kill Snow White?
a) one
b) two
c) four
3. How does the Queen convince Snow White to eat the apple?
a) she disguises herself as an old woman
b) the Queen shoves it down her throat
c) the Queen eats part of the apple herself
4. What brings Snow White back to life?
a) the prince’s kiss
b) the death of the Queen
c) the apple falls out of her throat
The answers are below the movie trailer.
The answers to all of them are c 🙂
1. The names in a) are from the 1912 Broadway play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the names in b) are from Disney’s 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
2. The Queen makes four attempts on Snow White’s life. The first is when she sends the huntsman to cut out her heart, but he takes pity on her and brings back a boar’s heart instead. Next the Queen dresses as a peddler to sell Snow White stay-laces. The Queen laces Snow White up so tight she can’t breathe, but the dwarves rescue her in time. In the third attempt, the Queen disguises herself as an old woman and combs Snow White’s hair with a poison comb. The dwarves come to her rescue again. The fourth and final attempt with the poisoned apple is successful.
3. The Queen is actually dressed as a farmer’s wife when she brings the apple. She cuts a slice for herself and eats only the unpoisoned white part.
4. The prince’s kiss is a later addition. In the 1812 version, the prince falls in love with Snow White even though she’s dead, and asks the dwarves for the coffin. As his servants are carrying it away, they trip on a root and dislodge the apple from her throat.
How did you do on the quiz? Is anyone else looking forward to this movie as much as I am?

I’d forgotten so much of this:) The movie looks great. However, I think Kristen Stewart is a poor actress so I have misgivings. I’ve already read she relies on her usual ticks in this performance, which is too bad. But overall, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth (yum) are enough to pull me into the theater:)
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:05:06
My guess is that Kristen Stewart was chosen more for her fame in her previous role than for her talent (or lack thereof). Even if she fails as Snow White, though, she’s flanked by two stronger actors, and I think they will be able to make the movie a success. That’s my hope anyway!
Jun 01, 2012 @ 09:13:10
Woo! I scored 100% (I love old school fairy tales).
The movie looks visually stunning (a friend from high school worked on the effects team – the same team that won the Oscar for Hugo) and I love darker versions of classics.
I am a little on the fence about Kristen Stewart. I am not too familiar with her acting work, but it is hard for me to imagine her as “the fairest in the land” up against Charlize. No offense to KS – she is pretty, but Charlize is really striking.
Jun 01, 2012 @ 15:57:55
That’s so cool that you know someone who worked on the visual effects team.
I didn’t watch all the Twilight movies (full confession – I watched 30 minutes of the first one and turned it off), so my experience with her acting is limited, but from what I saw, I’m very leery.
I said the same thing to my husband! He said to me, “Maybe they mean inner beauty.”
Jun 01, 2012 @ 21:13:16
Haha! My hubs said he read that you see little of Snow White in the film compared to the Queen and the Huntsmen – so for those leery about KS, maybe that will be a comfort. 🙂

I totally FAILED the quiz….LOL!! But I am still definitely going to see the movie. Not sure about this weekend but SOON!! I can’t wait…squeee!!!
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:06:19
I don’t know exactly what day I’m going to see it yet either (the husband works on Saturday and my Sunday is almost booked solid), but I’m hoping for Monday 🙂
Jun 01, 2012 @ 09:49:17
3 out of 4 on your quiz! That’s a passing grade, right?
The trailer for this movie looks so good, but like Stacy, I’m not sure about Kristen Stewart in the role. Still, I’ll give it a shot. I’d love to be happily surprised! HEAs are what we love!
Jun 01, 2012 @ 15:59:34
That’s totally a passing grade 🙂 I’m hoping for the best even with Kristen Stewart in the movie because I love dark fairy tale remakes, especially if they come with a HEA (which it better or I’ll be so disapointed).
Jun 01, 2012 @ 09:53:01
Great post, and I’m DYING to see this flick. LOOKS SO GREAT! And I’m not too worried about K Stew. I think she’ll do awwhright. Even in Charlize’s shadow. 🙂
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:00:25
I love your optimism. I’m not so sure, but I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt until I see the movie 🙂
Jun 01, 2012 @ 10:29:04
I’m all kinds of excited to see this movie. And I got the questions right 😀
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:00:55
Next to The Hunger Games and the Avengers, this is the movie I’ve most been looking forward to for this year.
Jun 01, 2012 @ 10:30:55
I watch Snow white with my granddaughters on DVD so we know what answer grandma chose LOL.
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:01:16
Hehe. I can’t tell you how sweet that is!
Jun 01, 2012 @ 10:49:31
I got all the answers correct, but only because I picked the most horrific answer to each question. I won’t be going to the theatre to watch the movie–though our “huntsman” is to quote Stacy “YUM”.
The comments about the actresses… I think it makes a certain amount of sense that the better actress (Charlize) was cast as the wicked queen rather than the “heroine”. It actually takes more skill to pull off an unsympathetic character and make him/her enjoyable (imho). And really, the queen NEEDS to shine for a good portion of the movie…a challenging task.
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:03:22
When it comes to the original versions of fairy tales, the most horrific answers are always the safest bet 🙂
I tend to agree with you. The strongest actress needs to be in the villain’s role in this movie especially. I still would have liked to see someone else as Snow White, but this movie is going to stand or fall on the role of the Evil Queen, not Snow White.
Jun 01, 2012 @ 11:03:42
LOL my knowledge is all from the Disney version, so I totally failed the quiz! The movie looks really good – going to have to see it!
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:07:04
I find that a good trailer can really make the difference between whether I’m willing to see a movie or not.
Jun 01, 2012 @ 13:25:06
Got ’em all. Still have my hard cover Grimm’s Fairy Tales from when I was a kid. Best creepy tales ever that kept me awake many nights, all turned into happily ever after by Disney. But I love those too…
Jun 01, 2012 @ 13:31:04
I am oh so excited for this movie. Although think Kristen plays the same role in everything she does. Boo. The quiz – 🙁 Only half right. Again – Boo!
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:09:25
Think of it this way, half right is better than nothing 🙂
My husband says the same thing about Robert Pattinson. After seeing him in Water for Elephants, he does seem to be one of those actors who expresses very little emotion.
Jun 01, 2012 @ 16:11:32
I gave Pattinson a chance until I saw the previews for that. Part of their acting in Twilight bounces off Stewarts poor quality AND the fact that all the vampires are played (stupidly) stoic. Peter F. and the guy who plays Jasper are much better actors than they show in Twilight. So I’d hope the same for Pattinson. Then I saw the WFE previews and nope. Same expressions. Seeing more of same for Cosmopolis, too.
Jun 02, 2012 @ 15:03:47
I was going to say the same thing about Kristen Stewart. She’s a one-dimensional ‘actress’ who will never appeal to anyone old enough to know what good acting is. Other than Renee, she was my least favorite character in the Twilight series.
As for the quiz… I missed the one about how many times the queen tried to kill her, but I answered a AND c…because I know both versions. So technically I got four correct, right? 🙂
Jun 01, 2012 @ 21:09:42
Well Marcy, I have to say I almost got them all right. But number two stumped me. I couldn’t remember how many times the wicked Queen tried to kill Snow White. I knew all the dwarf’s names because I included them in one of my posts. That was fun. I guess were never too old, are we? Have a great weekend! 🙂
Jun 01, 2012 @ 22:11:36
Yay, I aced the quiz.
This trailer made me even more excited about the movie. I have my doubts about Kristen Stewart too but Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth definately make the movie worth it.
Jun 01, 2012 @ 23:33:17
I aced the quiz because I used to read all the versions of each fairy tale. 🙂
Charlize Theron looks like a smokin’ fabulous Evil Queen!
Jun 02, 2012 @ 18:20:19
Um, I cheated and went straight to the answers. 😉 To be honest, I barely recall Snow White’s story. Happy to know some trivia to utilize as I refresh my dust-coated memory. Thanks, Marcy! Hope you’re having a GREAT weekend.
Jun 03, 2012 @ 10:13:58
I totally failed the quiz. I now have a mix up of the Disney version and the show Once Upon A Time stuck in my head. But, I think the movie looks awesome! Although I don’t buy the premise that there is a fairer in the land at all, but especially not Kristen Stewart. I kind of feel like the evil queen would look at her, shrug her shoulders and say, “She’s not fairer then me” and have some words with her magic mirror. Cherlize looks AMAZING in the trailer and that alone is enough to go and see it for. Plu, I like the absense of Prince Charming. That seems very cool to me.
Jun 03, 2012 @ 13:01:23
I certainly failed that one.
Jun 04, 2012 @ 19:31:11
I got them all right! Okay, so what I really had to do was not think of Disney and go with my gut, but hey, I’ll take it!
