Want to Try Beorn’s Honey Cake from The Hobbit?
By Marcy Kennedy (@MarcyKennedy)
The Hobbit came out last week, so I thought it was only fitting to do a little digging and see if I could find a treat to celebrate the release. What I found was a recipe for Beorn’s honey cake.
Beorn is a shape-shifter (what J.R.R. Tolkien called a “skin-changer” in the book). He’s a vegetarian, but can take the shape of a bear. In the novel, he helps Gandalf, Bilbo, and the thirteen dwarves in their quest to regain the dwarves’ kingdom.
Here’s how Tolkien describes Beorn’s send off.
He lade them with food to last them for weeks with care, and packed so as to be as easy as possible to carry — nuts, flour, sealed jars of dried fruit, and red earthenware pots of honey, and twice backed cakes that would keep a good long time, and on a little of which they could march far. The making of these was one of his secrets; but honey was in them, as in most of his foods, and they were good to eat, though they made one thirsty.
The Hobbit, Chapter 7
What I love most is the line “but honey was in them, as in most of his foods” because he could take the form of a bear. (It makes me think of Winnie the Pooh.)
For those of you who want to try it, you can find the recipe for Beorn’s honey cake here.
And inquiring minds want to know, what’s your favorite kind of cake?

Wow! That looks good. My dad is allergic to chocolate, so I might have to try that for his birthday one year. 🙂

Does your dad like pumpkin? I have a recipe for a delicious pumpkin cake too. (It’s my husband’s favorite thing I bake.)

Hi Marcy!
I still haven’t made it out to see The Hobbit. As soon as I get some free time I am al over it.
That is pretty cool that somebody made a recipe for Beorn’s cake!
I actually don’t have a favorite cake. While most people I know have a sweet tooth, I have a savory tooth. I love savory foods. It is rare that I crave something sweet.
So, in answer to your question, I’m going to have to say crab cake! 😉

They took some liberties with the movie vs. the book, but if you enjoyed the book, I think you’ll enjoy the movie.
I love your answer about favorite cake! I wouldn’t have thought about crab cakes .

Just saw The Hobbit. I recommend it in high frame 3-D. Well done. My favorite cakes (can’t have just one 🙂 is carrot and chocolate, okay and a white cake with really good chocolate frosting. Now I may have to dig into my chocolate stash. Happy holidays.

Honey cake sounds good! My favorite right now is red velvet, but in the cupcake form. But I like dessert, so my favorite changes a lot. I’m also liking anything with a salted caramel sauce. Really, I just like desserts. I’m going to check out that recipe. Thanks for sharing.

Red Velvet is my husband’s favorite. I make it for his birthday every year (and a few times during the year as well).
