What Skill Do You Wish You Had?
I’m in awe of skilled musicians. Because I play the flute myself (and a few other instruments), I know how long it takes to become even quasi-proficient.
For this month’s fantasy music feature, I wanted to share the Harry Potter theme played by Jarrod Radnich of The Piano Guys. Watch his fingers.
What’s your favorite movie soundtrack? And what skill are you in awe of?

I wish I could draw. I had kindergarten students laughing at my drawings.

I totally wish I could sing. Yes, I’ve actually had a rock star fantasy (being one, not dating one) since I first watched the cartoon Jem as a kid. Unfortuntely for me, I’m pretty sure I’m tone deaf. I don’t think voice lessons would make me any better than a House Wife of Wherever with a bad dance hit. 🙂

First of all, I loved Jem growing up. (And I think we’ve just dated ourselves admitting we watched it 😉 )
I have the ear, but no voice to go with it, which I think is almost worse because I can hear just how terribly off I am!

Can I just steal your response? Because *YES* to Gem, and I don’t care if that dates me! And also, yes to wishing I could sing! I say we all meet up, drink some yummy adult frozen drinks, watch a few eps of Gem, and then hit a karaoke bar. Who cares if you can’t sing when you’re with a bunch of pals who enjoyed Gem in their childhood?! Who’s with me on this??? 🙂

Sounds great to me! We all could probably use to relive our childhood joy a little more often 🙂

Hey, fellow flutist, did you coincidentally post this fabulous Harry Potter arrangement on John Williams’ birthday? He’s 81 today. Although he’s my favorite overall movie composer, I still remember being blown away by Howard Shore’s music in Fellowship of the Ring.
Coming from a family of artists, I always wished I could paint like my parents and my sisters (and now one of my sons). I can draw with pencil or markers but not paint. I admire anyone who can! I’m thankful I can paint with music notes and words, though… 🙂

The Sound of Music because it reminds me of my father, who used to take my 7 sisters and I to see it every year when I was a kid (all by himself while my mom got a much needed break).
We watched it every year and I still know the words to all the songs.
I wish I could sing and play piano like Alicia Keys (isn’t she amazing?).

I love a lot of movie soundtracks, but the Man From Snowy River is very close to the top. I think I like it because I can play some of it on the piano. Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark have some good tracks too.
I also like western movie soundtracks, like the Magnificent Seven; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and some of those really good old time t.v. western theme songs.
Fun video!

Great question. The talents I’m most in awe of are: brilliant writing, hauntingly beautiful singing voices, acting talent that leaves you breathless, and anyone who can play the piano or cello. While I’m a looooong way off, I’m working on the first, simply do not have the second, never given the third a try, and have taken cello lessons but stopped when life got too busy.

I figure skated when I was a kid but was afraid of the big jumps. When the only path to continue was to start competing and face those jumps, I quit.
I still have vivid dreams where I figure skate like a true ice ballerina. And naturally I love watching figure skating on TV.
It would have been lovely to ace that skill but I’m happier when writing 🙂
As for the fave soundtrack, I have to choose The Fifth Element. Great movie and great music. And the Diva Dance is epic.

Figure skating is such a beautiful sport. I love pairs skating best, but I’m no where near coordinated enough to do something like that myself 🙂

I’d love to be able to read music and play any instrument. The bugle I played in high school was mostly by ear and memorizing songs.
John Williams is one of my favorites. I’m taking the entire family to the symphony tribute to his music this weekend. My musically-talented girls are very excited. 🙂

I can read music and play it. I took figure skating, but hurt myself on a jump once. I was always okay at these things. Not great. Same goes for drawing, painting… I always wanted to sing. I can’t sing to save my life. 🙁
The hubs and I are huge John Williams fans and will go to see him when he has his concerts out here at the Hollywood Bowl. If you ever happen to hear or watch a video of one of his Hollywood Bowl events and you hear someone yell out, “For the love of GOD, Superman.” That would be my party. 😀 He wasn’t playing the Superman Theme and hubs best friend REALLY wanted to hear it. LOL.

My fave soundtrack to listen to while writing is anything musical with no words to distract me (YES to Harry Potter, and before that my fave was Legends of the Fall). My fave soundtrack to sing along with (much to the chagrin of anyone in hearing distance) is Moulin Rouge. And my fave soundtracks to listen to with my 8yo daughter are mish-mash Disney combos, which of course requires more singing.

That was just…insane. Thank you for sharing! I’ve only just heard about The Piano Guys recently, so I’ve been trying to find more of there stuff. Also, anything Harry Potter is golden in my eyes.
I would have to say drawing for a talent I wish I had. I’d love to be able to produce art like that. But, alas, it looks like I’ll just have to stick with words for now.
